Dear Readers:
I'm a walker. I get out there
most mornings and enjoy the great outdoors. Although I strap on my
sneakers all year around, fall is my favorite time to walk. The
blackflies of spring and the deerflies of summer are gone, and the
snow of winter is yet to come. Then there's the flashy color the
fall trees put on and the snap of crisp autumn air that puts an
extra bounce in my step. My senses enjoys the show. My muscles
like the workout. My brain wakes up. And spending those extra
outdoor calories allows me to indulge in another
favorite--desserts. Thanksgiving (my favorite holiday--I mean just
look at the feast of food!) isn't too far away. After I discovered
a sensitivity to corn, I thought I'd have to give up my yearly piece
of pecan pie with all that corn syrup. Then I came across this
recipe, and my Thanksgiving treat was saved.

1 (9-inch) unbaked pie
shell
3 eggs, beaten
1 cup pure maple syrup
1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup pecan pieces
1 cup pecan halves
Place rack in lowest
position in oven and preheat oven to 350° F. In a
medium bowl, combine all ingredients, except pie shell
and pecan halves. Pour mixture into pie shell.
Decorate top with pecan halves. Bake for 35-40 minutes
or until golden. Cool. Refrigerate leftovers.

website

books. You can download individual recipes or the whole

Q:
Have you ever used something
that’s happened to you?
A: A few times. It pops up
in a different context, of course. I learned to kayak for
Alyssa Again and used my experience as a beginner for
Brooke. Nora in Spirit of a Hunter had never hiked
before, and I used my experience as a novice hiker for her. I've
gone to several gun workshops to get the feel of different weapons.
I've also visited the local morgue on a Sisters-in-Crime field
trip. Research is a fun part of writing.
Q:
How do you
name your characters?
A:
When I'm
stuck for a name my favorite place to go is the random
name generator online. You can set it as to how “normal” or
“bizarre” you want the list and, ta-da, you have a list of thirty
names to choose from. If you don’t like those, you can repeat the
experiment until you get something you like. For me, the
character's name has to feel right before I can start writing.
If you have a question you’d like
answered, send it to me
and I’ll pick a couple of them to answer in the next newsletter.

Check out the monthly contest
on my page.
In October, I'll be giving away a copy of Spirit of a Hunter
and a set of leaf candles.
Remember to give thanks for the good things in your life and
multiply their blessing.

Until next time, keep reading!
